Honolulu Festivals
Aloha Festivals
Every year during September and October, the Aloha Festivals (formerly known as Aloha Week) celebrate Hawai'i's music, dance and history with events on six islands. Major Honolulu events include numerous hula exhibitions, a Waikiki block party, the Frank B. Shaner Falsetto Contest, and the annual Aloha Festivals Floral Parade. Classes and demonstrations of traditional Hawaiian arts are also offered, including net fishing, poi making, 'ukulele playing and quilting.
Honolulu Prince Lot Hula Festival
Honolulu's Prince Lot Hula Festival takes place mid-July at Moanalua Gardens. The festival organizers invite Hawaii’s top halau (hula schools) to perform songs, chants and dances in order to celebrate and share Hawaiian culture. The hula festival also features demonstrations in Hawaiian instrument-making, lei-making, quilt-weaving and leaf-weaving. Be sure to visit Prince Lot's cottage, built in approximately 1853, on Honolulu's Moanalua Gardens grounds. (Avital Binshtock)
Punahou Carnival
Every February, Honolulu residents of all ages turn out in droves for the annual Punahou Carnival. Located on the campus of the historic Punahou School, the carnival features rides, games, art exhibits, shopping, and numerous Hawaiian-style food options. Be sure to try the famous Punahou malassadas (Portuguese doughnuts with no hole).
